3. Powerpoint Presentation

  1. Hey Vineet! I just wanted to say I thought your presentation was extremely well-organized, and you clearly conveyed the literary techniques of the pieces you chose to read, and how it thematically relates to a higher meaning (striving for success, even in the face of adversity). One thing I was wondering was that in during your presentation you stated that although unknown, Knut Hamsun was in many ways the "father of literary modernism," however I never quite caught exactly HOW he was. If he was so unknown, how did he birth the very modern techniques we know today (stream of consciousness, etc.)?

I have no doubt that what you’re saying is right, but I think if you showed how Knut Hamsun’s author influences were then extrapolated to his pioneering the birth of modernism, you not only would have better qualified Hamsun’s works, but even have shown a stronger connection of how his own influence (in creating literary modernism) was laced throughout his novels to enhance the meaning of his works as a whole. As an end note, I just want to say thank you for choosing an unconventional author – it was fascinating to learn about someone that I have never heard of before, and it has made me interested in reading his works myself.

  2. Hi, Vineet! I thought it was really neat that you read the translated versions of Knut Hamsun’s works, it reminded me of how I had read the translated version of one of the poems I chose, “Identity Card” by Mahmoud Darwish. For “Identity Card”, there are multiple translations with slight discrepancies between different versions and I was wondering if that applied to your books as well? If so, do you think the different versions have had any notable impact on the devices Knut Hamsun used? Or how much of the literary devices in the translated work would you attribute to the translator?
Concerning your actual presentation...I thought it was very well-done and liked your thesis statement claiming that one can achieve full understanding of themselves in times of stress. You seemed to have a very clear understanding of literary devices and their relevancy to Hamsun’s themes in his writing. I also thought your tweet was interesting since it was essentially the total opposite of my presentation (“everything is political”) but fit perfectly with your presentation. Also, while looking through your blog, I also really liked the promotional poster you made. It looks very professional as well as captivating and aesthetically pleasing.

  3. I would first like to begin and say your presentation was very well organized and you seemed very prepared for your presentation. I thought your ideas and claims were very strong and thought provoking, such as Knut Hamsun’s argument that in times of stress will individuals find themselves, or understand who they are. This to me was quite interesting, and I took it into consideration of our own high school lives. How us students are constantly under stress from multiple classes, and in the end do we find our own identity? Do you find any sort of personal connection to Knut and his beliefs? I like how you also included who influenced Knut Hamsun’s argument, as it helped to understand how Knut conjured this belief. I admire how you also explained how Knut’s literature and beliefs have influenced other famous authors.
I think including your activity was a great way to engage the audience, however I was confused as to how it exactly connected to your argument. I can understand how Knut creates the stream of consciousness, but I was confused as to how confusion related back to self-identification. I think you made great connections between both poems and specifically Sylvia Plath and Knut share the same stressors in their life. It continued to move your analysis forward and I think you did a fantastic job at diving into the poem and digging deeper to find the stressor in Plath’s that catalyzed her self-identification. Thank you for such an interesting presentation!

  4. First of all, you did a very good job of representing the hash tags of “yolo” and “deep” during your presentation. Your thesis was very universal which I found caught my interest. It is very similar to the theory that you learn the most about yourself by how you act when no one is watching. I found that when this was paired with your ideology derived from your author Knut Hamson, you show your true colors when stressed, and there was a unique fluidity to your argument that I felt lacked in many of the other presentations. Through this spurred my intrigue. As I read a little deeper into your presentation, the stream of consciousness you suggested occurs subtly in my authors writings as well, with the same purpose. I found that Mark Twain was able to comment and say thing that he could not through the stream of consciousness of someone else. Is this embodiment present in your authors work? If so, I believe that could have been a good point to add to your presentation. Again, way to represent, I feel enlightened!
